Public Talks

PLEASE email talks@shem.im if you would like to attend any of the talks. This is so we have numbers for coffee and seating. Most are FREE to attend and everyone is welcome. If you would like to be added to my mailing list for future talks or would like to subscribe to my ‘Nutrition Bytes’ newsletter you can do so using the mail sign up box – bottom right of this web page.

‘Better Health In A Toxic World’ – We are all exposed to hundreds of chemicals on a daily basis. Shem presents  a  four-part series on how these can have a major impact on your health and wellbeing, and what you can do about it:

Part 1: So you thought your food was safe? Think again!

Part 2: Household & personal care products – Buyer beware!

Part 3: Glyphosate, gluten & human health – What you should know!

Part 4: The dangers of pharmaceuticals – Customers for life! (NB: This is not an ‘anti-pharmaceutical’ talk but rather one about responsible use, and the environmental effects of over use)

‘The Microbiome and its importance for human nutrition and health’ – Dates  and venues to be announced. FREE

‘Part 1: Gluten awareness – introduction’, Re-scheduled for October 17. Course fee: £15/person for each session attended.

This talk is aimed at anyone who works in catering, including those staff who serve food and drinks to the public. Registered dietitian, Ms Shem Allanson will discuss the different types of reactions to foods that can occur including allergy, intolerance and autoimmune reactions. She will then describe, in some detail, the effects of gluten on those with coeliac disease and other gluten mediated conditions. She will cover your legal responsibilities as a caterer and the consequences of not getting it right.

Shortly the number of people on gluten-free diets may be as high as one in ten so this is not something any caterer can ignore. Failure to provide gluten-free options could considerably reduce your clientele numbers. Getting it wrong could result in poor reviews on social media websites. It is not as difficult as you think. It just requires a little knowledge and some forethought and preparation.
